Our mission is to establish a community of trained Caregivers, whereby the youth in rural communities and the unemployed, can utilize various resources for aiding those who cannot help themselves, in spiritual growth and leadership development, in present times and for the future.
Home Base Care is a twelve months course. It provides a medical structure for Palliative Care in a multicultural setting. A course integrated in the understanding of the human body, with the study of the function of the human body as it relates to lifestyle practices that optimizes fitness, nutrition, health and resistance to disease.
Home health care assistants serve an honourable and crucial role in our society by helping the disabled, elderly and chronically ill maintain a high quality of life. The Home Health Care provides an understanding of the purpose, functions, responsibilities and role of the Caregiver. The programme enables the transfer of skills and competencies applicable to focus areas including infection control, oral hygiene, body systems, hypertension, disabilities and emergency situations. The programme likewise places emphasis on the role and function of the home-based Caregiver.
Assumptions of Prior Learning
Students need the following skills to benefit from this course:
- Be capable of communicating effectively in the language of instruction
- Be able to read and write
- Be capable of independent learning
The student will be familiar to the first level of care and will be able to define essential health care. This is the point of entry into the health care system. It aims at promoting health, preventing disease and treating minor ailments and emergencies, it includes:
- Education about a Healthy Diet
- HIV/AIDS STI’s TB and other Chronic Diseases
- Dangers of Smoking, drinking Alcohol and using Drugs
- Responsibility of a Health Care Worker
- Anatomy, Physiology and the Skin
- Digestive System
- Respiratory System
- Urinary System
- Nervous System
- Endocrine System
- Total Patient Care
- The Quadriplegic
- Infection control
- Common illnesses
- Emergency situations
- Alzheimer and Dementia
- Palliative Care — death and dying
- Care of the Caregiver
Lessons will include lectures, discussions and group activities. Individual assignments will also be allocated.
Test – There will be a test every day about the previous lectures.
Reading Report – Students will submit a two page reading report about difference topics
Class Presentation – Every student will present their reading report to the class.
520 Practical hours to be done at specified institutions.
